Our initiatives

Recycling projects, carbon offsets and sustainability training sessions – these are some of the initiatives that we started in 2022 to reduce our environmental footprint.

FINLAND

Recycling pilot to extend lifecycle of workwear

In Finland, Fristads started a recycling project with its customer ISS, a facility management company with operations all over the country. Through the pilot project, ISS employees are encouraged to turn in their workwear for recycling instead of discarding them, with the goal of extending the life cycle of the fibres. Through the project, Fristads collects data on how likely employees are to recycle their workwear, how much textile waste is generated and how many of the garments are in good enough condition that they can be repaired and resold. Results are not yet available since the pilot is still ongoing.

Algae dye is put to the test

In 2022, Fristads participated in the first tests of an innovative algae dye, developed for the textile industry by the Swedish startup Mounid. The algae dye is completely natural and requires less water and energy in production than traditional, chemical-intensive fabric dyeing. Plus, algae sequester CO2 when they grow, effectively reducing the users’ climate footprint in the cultivation phase. The first colours to be developed are different shades of green and blue.

Fristads offsets carbon by supporting biomass plant in India

For the third consecutive year, Fristads offset the emissions of carbon dioxide associated with the production of our Outdoor collection. A portion of the 2022 sales was used to support a project in Punjab, India, that turns biomass into energy by using organic matter like rice husks, animal waste, sawmill waste and palm oil waste as fuel. The biomass plant avoids the use of fossil fuels while providing the local community with employment opportunities and energy for homes and textile manufacturing facilities. Fristads contributed €9,806 to the project, preventing 3,668 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere.

UKRAINE

Stritex reuses all fabric waste

All paper and fabric waste from Fristads’ factory Stritex was collected and sent for processing. A share of the fabric scraps was regularly sent to volunteers who used it to produce camouflage nets for the Ukrainian army.

DACH

Consolidated deliveries save CO2

In the DACH region, Fristads consolidated deliveries to customers to cut CO2 emissions. Instead of daily deliveries, customers in Switzerland now receive shipments twice per week and customers in Germany and Austria two to three times per week.

DENMARK

Music, climate and sustainability

Fristads and Kansas Denmark participated in FORUM, a two-day climate and sustainability conference in conjunction with the Tinderbox music festival in Odense. The inaugural event was organised by the local business community, educational institutions and the municipality of Odense. In addition to showcasing Fristads’ environmentally declared high-vis collections at the event, we held a sustainability seminar for our partners. The purpose of the collaborative event was to keep the city’s business community and citizens up to date on the city’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2030.
