Sustainability begins in the design room
At Fristads, we know sustainability begins long before the first stitch – that’s why it’s embedded in our product development. Every garment is designed with the goal of reducing environmental impact while delivering the same high standards of quality, comfort, and durability that our customers expect. By considering sustainability from the get-go, we make sure it becomes a natural part of our workflow, not an afterthought. Our designers systematically evaluate every detail – from fabrics and trims to pockets and zippers – and ask themselves whether it is truly necessary, or if there is a better, more sustainable alternative. This process ensures that sustainability is built into every product we create.
When developing new products, we make sure the more sustainable choice – whether recycled polyester or zippers made from recycled plastic – is the default, placed first in the design palette. Only if those materials cannot be used do the designers move on to other alternatives, making it effortless to choose better. We also design garments with repair and reuse in mind. Features such as easily replaceable zippers extend the lifespan of workwear, ensuring each garment is used to its full potential. By maximising wear and reducing the need for replacements, we cut down on waste, emissions, and the demand for virgin resources.
Technology plays a central role in our sustainable design strategy. Digital tools, such as 3D modeling and a fitting library, cut down on the need for physical samples and transports, while reducing returns. We also find creative ways to incorporate surplus materials into new designs, for example by developing limited edition collections. Larger batches of existing materials can be incorporated into new products, as a detail on a hood, loop or pocket. For us, sustainable design is about more than individual solutions – it’s about building a system where every decision, large or small, drives us toward a lower environmental footprint. By combining innovative tools, responsible materials, and thoughtful construction, Fristads is shaping the future of sustainable workwear.
